Impressed by her March visit to Victoria to see Dr. Paul Shoecraft’s MOVE IT Math project in action, Governor Ann Richards later endorsed funding of the program as one of her top priorities. In addition, State Comptroller John Sharp, in a video produced by his office for television, touted MOVE IT Math as one of two innovative programs in the state that represent his idea of positive change.

During the Governor’s visit here, she was briefed on Shoecraft’s program at the university, then driven to O’Connor Elementary School to see the teaching concepts put into practice in the classroom. As quoted in the Victoria Advocate, Richards said, “MOVE IT Math is a quantum leap ahead” in math instruction for kindergarten and elementary school children.

Over the summer, Shoecraft was responsible for MOVE IT Math training conducted in New Braunfels, Dallas, Rosenberg, San Antonio, and Beeville. In addition, MOVE IT Math workshops directed by Shoecraft were held in Kerrville, Schulenburg, Gladewater, Goliad, Waller, Lohn, Devine, and Santa Fe.

Assisted by area teachers trained in MOVE IT Math, Shoecraft developed over the summer a K-6 curriculum guide for incorporating the program into the math curriculum.
