A very successful new way of teaching mathematics to kindergarten through sixth grade students, developed at the University of Houston – Victoria, has received federal funds of $67,380 for a $134,210 in-service project involving 10 area school districts and more than 100 elementary teachers.
UH–Victoria Education Professor Paul Shoecraft, who is directing the program and research, said the Eisenhower Math and Science Program funds will support the program in the Hallettsville area during the spring and second summer sessions of 1990.
This spring, Shoecraft is working with 25 Victoria area elementary teachers at Hallettsville High School during a semester-long session. They will prepare the curriculum for the 100 teachers to be trained in the summer program.
For the summer session, the participating school districts are Columbus, which will sponsor up to 21 teachers; Cuero, 15; Gonzales, 15; Hallettsville, 15; Nordheim, 6; Rice Consolidated, 15; Sacred Heart, 6; Vysehrad, 2; Waelder, 4; and Yoakum, 3.
The summer program’s classes will meet in five locations: Cuero, Hallettsville, Gonzales, Columbus and Rice Consolidated.
The federal funding will be matched with $33,458 from UH-Victoria and $33,372 from the participating school districts in tuition fees and in-kind contributions.

Math Program Attracts National Notice — Interest in the innovative mathematics teaching techniques developed by Dr. Paul Shoecraft (center) is now being shown by educators on a national level. The headquarters of the American Federation of Teachers (Washington, D.C.) sent Marilyn Routh and Bob Nielsen [a former mathematics professor] to observe the Port O’Connor model program and to visit with teachers and administrators involved with the program in the school and its district. The two took excellent reports of the program back to the AFT, which is interested in supporting in-service programs to improve mathematics instruction in the public schools.
