Are the Fair Lands Blocks Just for Children?
Years ago, about the time of , the author of this booklet, Paul Shoecraft, taught a night class at Arizona State Prison, a federal penitentiary in Florence. The class covered arithmetic and elementary algebra and met once a week for about 2 hours for 14 weeks. About 20 men took the class, ranging in age from 20-50 and in incarceration time from 1-20 years. Instruction was individualized in a continual progress format.
While subtracting mixed numbers, Paul noticed some of the men just sprinkling 1s about when they had to “borrow.”
